Statement
My work is grounded in the use of tools: their form, their function, and their role in the process of transforming materials. As a photographer I am attracted to the form of objects. A photograph may trigger a sculptural idea, and a sculpture may end up as the subject in a photograph. I am interested in how objects interact when placed in proximity to each other. My work engages multiple mediums, and comes to fruition through installation as seen in my newest works which combine my photography and sculpture practice.
Bio
Jeff Sandeen is an artist from Minneapolis working at the intersection of sculpture and photography. His work is informed by a background in dance and choreography. After receiving a BFA in Dance from Stephens College, he helped establish the dance program at Gustavus Adolphus. Sandeen’s choreographic works have been performed at the Walker Art Center, 127 North Washington, and in the MICA Studio X grant series. He choreographed dance for a Dan Polsfuss film Rain on the Lion, now in the collection of the New York Public Library. He collaborated with Melisande Charles on a multi-monitor animation called Thoth performed at the Southern Theater. Sandeen’s photographic panoramas were on display during the 2022 NEMAA Art-A-Whirl event. In Sandeen’s current work, Performance Weave, monochrome photographs are presented in combination with peg loom sculptures and cast metal.
